Welcome to the Essential Barista Course. Over the space of two days we will go over the basic principles of espresso coffee and focus on developing the essential barista skill set. This course highlights the core elements of making excellent espresso coffee in a commercial cafe setting.

The two days are split into two, two-hour segments: Morning session and afternoon session, a total of 4 hours of class time each day, with a one hour lunch break between sessions.

Day One
9am - 2pm: Covers the importance of grasping the basics concepts.
Morning session is dedicated to understanding and practicing grind, tamping and extraction. Learning to season and dial in the grind. Understand the importance of dose, yield and time and of course to practice, practice, practice.
Afternoon session focuses on learning the technique of how to steam milk correctly and produce desirable microform. Breaking down the steps of texturing, spinning and heat management into easy to follow steps and then apply pouring technique to improve the appearance and taste of coffee.

Day two
9am - 2pm: Going through all common espresso based coffee beverages and learning about single origin and blended coffees. Followed by learning how to produce coffee in a similar setting to that of a café. We will learn about alternative milks and understanding the differences between them and how to apply that to making better coffee.
Morning session. The first half of day we will focus on coffee processing and understanding coffee origins and blends in greater depth. We will discuss and prepare every common espresso based drink and practice making them properly. We will discuss machine maintenance, understanding the equipment and teaching students how to trouble shoot common espresso machine issues.
Afternoon session is dedicated to cafe style work routines. We apply a time limit per order, practice making multiple orders, peer review results and compare expectations to results and learn to multitask. During the session we will integrate a practical application of alternative milks.
